Moderator’s Invitation: Journey to Detroit and the 221st General Assembly (2014) via Heidelberg
Grace and peace in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!
Because this Father’s Day weekend will mark exactly 52 weeks until the convening of the 221st General Assembly (2014) in Detroit, Michigan, on June 14, 2014, I invite you to join me on a trip that I am calling “Journey to Detroit and #GA221 via Heidelberg.”
We have in our Reformed tradition the richness of a theological heritage, to which the Heidelberg Catechism belongs. When Elector Frederick III commissioned the development of the catechism in the mid-sixteenth century, he intended for the depth of the Reformed faith to take root in the Palatinate through careful and prayerful reflection, study, and memorization of the catechism by young and old alike. This was to be done in homes, schools, workplaces, and churches. The 129 question and answer pairs of the catechism are grouped into 52 Lord’s Day sections, making it useful for corporate worship.
Beginning this Sunday, June 16, 2013 (Father’s Day)—and for 52 weekends thereafter—I will post reflections on each Lord’s Day section of the Heidelberg Catechism at my website.
